1922

Nick Carraway

Lead

Our narrator: a young Midwesterner, fresh from the war, who rents a small house in West Egg next door to Gatsby’s mansion. Honest, observant and slowly disillusioned, he guides the audience through the whole story and appears in nearly every scene.

Jay Gatsby

Lead

The mysterious self-made millionaire who throws the most extravagant parties on Long Island, all in hope that Daisy will wander through his door. Magnetic and elegant on the surface, with a boyish, desperate romantic underneath. “Old sport.”

Daisy Buchanan

Principal

Nick’s cousin and Gatsby’s lost love, now married to Tom. Charming, witty and luminous, with a voice “full of money” — and a restlessness she can never quite name.

Tom Buchanan

Principal

Daisy’s husband: a wealthy former Yale football star, powerful, arrogant and used to getting what he wants. Keeps a mistress in the city and suspects Gatsby from the start.

Jordan Baker

Principal

Daisy’s friend, a cool, self-assured champion golfer with a reputation for bending the rules. Wry, bored and funny, she becomes Nick’s companion through the summer.

Myrtle Wilson

Featured

Tom’s mistress, vivid and hungry for a bigger life than the one above her husband’s garage. Loud, sensual and full of vitality in the city apartment Tom keeps for her.

George Wilson

Featured

Myrtle’s husband, who runs a struggling garage in the Valley of Ashes. Pale, worn and devoted; grief and suspicion push him toward the play’s tragedy.

Meyer Wolfsheim

Featured

Gatsby’s shadowy business partner, a gambler rumored to have fixed the 1919 World Series. A small role with big color.

Mr. McKee

Supporting

A fussy photographer from the apartment downstairs who turns up at Tom and Myrtle’s party — and at Gatsby’s. Comic cameo.

Mrs. McKee

Supporting

Mr. McKee’s shrill, gossiping wife, never shy with an opinion at a party. Comic cameo.

Mrs. Michaelis

Supporting

The neighbor from the coffee shop beside Wilson’s garage, who witnesses the night everything goes wrong.

Policeman

Supporting

The officer on the scene in the Valley of Ashes in the second act.

Gatsby’s Manservant

Ensemble

Runs Gatsby’s household and his parties, never far from his employer. A silent-to-small part that is onstage through much of the play and anchors the scene changes at the mansion.

The Buchanans’ Servant

Ensemble

Keeps the Buchanans’ East Egg house running, from drinks in the parlor to the Plaza Hotel suite. A small part with a lot of stage time.

THE ENSEMBLE

Dancers wanted: 1920s jazz.

The play isn't a musical, but it runs like one. Gatsby's three big outdoor parties are high-energy 1920s dance scenes, with a few slow, romantic numbers along the way. We're casting 6–8 ensemble members with jazz-age dance skills. Charleston, Lindy, tap or a background in jazz dance are all welcome.

The ensemble plays Gatsby's party guests and the household staff of the Gatsby and Buchanan mansions, and helps carry the show's choreographed scene changes as set pieces roll on and off. It includes two named parts, Gatsby's Manservant and the Buchanans' Servant.
